Masters 2016 – Golf and Life Lessons

Unpredictable.

At least, that’s what the commentators reporting live from the Masters 2016 were saying about the golf tournament.

They may be right.

But here’s what I believe: the course may be unpredictable, but it’s the performance of the players that leaves the most questions.

That’s the real unpredictability!

You never know at the start who is going to be the winner.

And that got me thinking… about the name of this world famous tournament: The Masters.

Masters of what?

In my experience as a coach to golfers, to be a winner, you need to:

1. Be a Master of your destiny

Where are you going, what do you want to achieve … and how badly?

2. Be a Master of your skill

Trust that you have the capability and talent.

3. Be a Master of the course

Know every inch, and understand how the weather can change the landscape.

4. Be a Master of your performance

Believe that you are at the top of your game – and can take risks.

5. Be a Master of your own mind

Because this is the difference that makes the difference.

Manage your thoughts, suppress any doubts, and keep your cool under the pressure of the spotlight.

Life Lessons

But isn’t this just the same when it comes to life? Don’t we still need to be a master of the things above ?

Your ‘course’ is your course/career path in life – but the rest is exactly the same.

The more you are the Master of you, your performance and your mind – the greater your chance of success.

At anything.

It’s funny what a game of golf can teach you – if you look closely.

So congratulations to Danny Willett, this years winner, who achieved all of the 5 listed, and commiserations to Jordan Speith and Lee Westwood – who both could easily have won.

I’ll leave it to you to decide which of the 5 above, led to their finishing position.
