A lesson For Football Managers and Leaders?

Is this a lesson for Football Managers and Leaders alike?

As we watch in awe of Leicester City Football team riding high at the top of the Premiership, and the usual ‘top 4’ desperately trying  to catch them, it made me think of this old – but good – quote from Abraham  Lincoln.

Have I not destroyed my enemy when I have made him into my friend?

                                                          Abraham Lincoln

Ahh, the great Abraham Lincoln said it well.

It’s as relevant a lesson for Football Managers/Leaders today as it has ever been.

More and more I come across the issue of ‘politics’ in sports and in the office. Ego that gets in the way, and people behaving badly because they are fearful of losing their position or authority.

If only they could see that , as a leader, when you change your approach and you change your attitude – everything changes FOR you.

Let me give you some more examples, from another ‘great’ –  Mr. Dale Carnegie:

‘Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person’

                                                                     and

‘Show respect for the other person’s opinion. Never say ‘you’re wrong’

Does this make you look or feel like the weaker person?

Quite the opposite matey.

Everyone wants people on their side – very few are prepared to work hard to get it.

Why?….let’s be honest, because to do it you’d probably be out of your comfort zone, or you’d be taking risks, and you might even look a bit of a prat.

You’ll feel like others will have the upper hand.

…well I hate to say it to you ( SOMEONE has to) – playing safe, or even ‘fighting back’ – will lose you the  very ‘battle’ you’re up against.

Become a friend though ?, lead by example?.. NOW you’re talking!

That’s when you will be listened to, respected and followed.

NOW. Isn’t THAT what you want to see in a great leader?

Hell YES.

So go on then, that’s your challenge .

Be a (BL***Y GOOD) leader. Be tough. Be a friend. And Be prepared to change your approach.

Works for Claudio Ranieri – and Leicester City are doing absolutely fine.

Whether you are a Football/Sports Manager , or a different kind of Leader – I’m still talking to you.

Being in the spotlight gives you opportunities.

Use. Them. Well.
